How to make a Deerling Burlap Wreath!

This cute little chalkboard deer head caught my eye on my last trip to Michael"s Craft Store.
And I knew just what I wanted to do with it! So I grabbed it and a roll of black striped burlap and headed home with a fun project churning in my brain.

Here is my burlap wreath from last year. I followed these easy instructions over at Stonegable ;) It still had a bow on it, which worked our great since it had the colors I wanted to work with!

If you want to make your wreath into a cute "Deerling Wreath" well, it"s as easy as this!

Or you can take it one step further and add some dimension by adding a row of striped burlap!

I cut my roll of striped burlap into three lengths to make it easy to work with. Then I just found areas in the center of the burlap loops to add a row of the striped burlap all the way around the wreath.

It just took a few minutes to get the hang of it and it turned out great!

Now you can add the deerling and bow!

I liked the pop of red on the deer"s head and it gives the appearance of being in the center of the wreath.  I know that I am going to be tempted to try some chalk art on it! And maybe add a sprig of holly or two, but today I will enjoy it just as it is. I celebrate the first day of December by hanging a Christmas wreath on my front door! It appears that between the years of 2011-2013 (March), I "tweeted" somewhat voraciously (maybe before that too but I didn"t want to scroll back further). I remember making it private and thinking that it would be a repository for thoughts, quotes, song lyrics, and the like, so that when I remembered it, it would be interesting to look back on things. Not sure what I was hoping to gain by looking back on things, but anyway... GOOD PLAN, SELF. Because I proceeded to forget about Twitter for about 3.75 years until a fateful December night (tonight). So there I was, sitting in bed, once again browsing Airbnb properties that I will likely never find myself in, as they are mostly farmhouses in rural Wisconsin, converting myself to night shift (trying to stay up all night so I can sleep tomorrow). And I got an e-mail about how some app company re-tweeted a few of my posts. And I was like, Twitter?! What"s that?

Well anyway, it only took me two tries to guess my password and then I was IN. Reading back on everything was mostly terrifying because everything was written late at night in medical school; most were likely written when I was cold, too. And you never know what"s going to come out of your mouth when you are cold and desperate to sleep. I think they capture the feelings in my life at that point really well. Working really hard, falling in love, lucky to have friends who are hilarious and sweet, battles with being able to fall asleep and stay awake during appropriate times, occasionally feeling overtaken by fear, and often being taken over by a feeling of needing to eat popcorn. Now that I think about it, as different as things seem on the surface, I don"t know that that many things are different. I"m not technically a student anymore, but let"s be honest, I"m always a student. I"m still terrified and get lost in what everything is supposed to be about. I still feel perplexed by death (and now I"ve seen it happen in front of me a few times), I"m still falling in love and eating popcorn and checking the weather hoping for rain. But, I take care of more things now. I get paid for my ability to manipulate sleep and not sleep. And importantly, I have a dog who is not entirely convinced he is a dog.

I guess that"s enough differences between then and now to wonder what this means because I don"t remember reading the book that Google says it is from.

Eating through Austin, TX

My friends know me very well. We took a weekend trip down to Austin which was basically Intro to Austin Foodie 101.

Of the places we went my favorites are : Michi Ramen"s Shoyu Tonkatsu, Lick"s Beat & Mint ice cream, and Wholy Bagel"s Egg bagel.

At this point I"m seriously considering moving down to Austin since it"s got both legit Ramen and Bagel game.

We did go some places such as the Graffiti Wall which was fun to see seasoned artists tag along with armatures. Over all, it was a great trip.

Gaiwan Tea Brewing

I am often asked how long I brew my teas for. To be honest, I don"t time myself. I only time my tea brewing is when I am brewing teas for initial tastings or comparison using the competition brewing set.

However, I understand the curiosity or frustration with using a Yixing tea pot or Gaiwan for the first time. I remember when I brewed Gongfu style tea the first few times and my tea didn"t taste right. I had friends who would brew the same teas, and what they brewed tasted better. When I asked them how they did it, they always looked at me a bit puzzled and told me to use my feeling and intuition.

That"s pretty vague, right? Feelings? What kind? I decided to watch them whenever I had a chance to watch people brewing tea. I discovered experienced tea people have developed their feelings and intuition so that brewing tea has become natural for them. They feel the tea. It"s like a beautiful dance between tea leaves and the brewers. It"s like the person who brews tea has a thougtful conversation with the leaves.

This can sound fu-fu. If you have been doing something well for a long time, like cooking, brewing your own beer, making kombucha etc., you will probably know what I am talking about. You build a very good sense of how you are going to tranform the ingredients into something delicious. You simply know when it"s ready for the next step.

However, we don"t start by being perfect. We try and make mistakes even when we follow the recipes. I encourage you to be open to making mistakes when you start to do Gongfu tea. If you can watch an experienced tea person brew tea, that might be the best way to learn how to brew tea.

If you have to measure the amounts of leaves, water temperature, and time yourself, do that. But please don"t follow any brewing instructions like they are laws. You can follow them the first couple of times to get used to brewing tea in a gaiwan or yixing tea pot, but go out of that box and see what you might discover.

With that being said, it"s still difficult if you are new to this. So in my next couple of posts, I will let you know what my brewing times are with some of the teas, with the help of a friend who secretly timed me.
